The great Fourth of July. Whether you wanna get away, or stay on home turf for the big holiday, we’ve got you covered. From pristine lake cabins to squeal-worthy pet parades, this is going to be one epic weekend.
Aside from professing your unwavering pride for your country, assembling an All-American playlist (consisting of T-swift all the way), and reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, we’ve compiled other, funner things you can do on the Fourth of July weekend.
Macy’s Fourth of July Fireworks, NYC
On July 4, Macy’s will explode more than 40,000 fireworks choreographed to a 25-minute patriotic tune. Come out early and stake out a nice spot near the Brooklyn Bridge. Bring your finger sandwiches, mushroom pates, and a split of cold white wine to toast our country’s birthday.
Best viewing locations: Broad Street, Old Slip at Water Street, Brooklyn Bridge Park, Brooklyn Bridge Promenade.
Vegas in July, “hot” is literal. But that’s just another excuse to break out those spaghetti straps and sexy sandals. Take comfort in the abundant air conditioning in every casino you visit. The Fremont Experience, which combines music, digital imagery and fireworks displays, is one of the most unique July 4th celebrations in the country.
House Party with Patriotic Soda
Stop being a bad American and give in to the desire to make something red, white, blue, and edible this Independence Day. July 4 is going to be scorching hot, so drink up this purple paradise to quench that thirst. All you need is KoolAid, Sprite, and an ice cube tray. Check out the recipe.
Lake Tahoe celebrates July 4 with “Lights on the Lake,” also known as the largest pyrotechnics show in the West. Over the weekend, Lake Tahoe has breathtaking firework displays on both sides of the lake. However, all the special events will be taking place on the South side. For a cheap place to stay, camp out at the Meeks Bay Resort.
Animal lovers rejoice! Bend maybe small but its pride is out of this world. Fourth of July in Bend means an all-day party in Drake Park with old-fashioned gunnysack races, hula-hoop contests, and, wait for this, the July 4th Pet Parade!!! As early as the 1930s, the town recognized their small people’s potential, parading their adorable kids and pets in patriotic costume.
Where do I sign up for my chihuahua?
Picnic at Astoria Park, NYC
Nothing beats a patch of green in the concrete jungle to soothe those stress molecules. Grab a seat on a bench along the East River between the Robert F. Kennedy and Hell Gate Bridges, or on the central Great Lawn. Astoria is a Greek-immigrant enclave, so save yourself the trouble of making picnic lunch from scratch. Order takeout from Agnanti. The Greek/Turkish restaurant has a patio overlooking the park, but their grilled fish and garides liana, shrimp in a splendid lemony sauce, will taste even better on the grass.
West Palm Beach, Florida
West Palm Beach is another primo location for those looking to vacay on the beach without breaking the bank. Plenty of July 4 activities will keep you entertained, including the Mega Bash II with “America’s Ultimate Journey Tribute Band.” In addition to the festivities, you can lounge on the beach and soak up the rays, while staying mysterious in a pair of Ray-Bans.
Time to start planning.
