Gay YouTube Star May Have Faked Homophobic Attack, Say Police

Out YouTube personality Calum McSwiggan claims to have been the victim of a targeted, homophobic attack outside a West Hollywood Gay bar on Sunday night.

“Last night was the worst night of my life and I’m really struggling to find the words to talk about it,” McSwiggan wrote in the caption of the photo he posted Monday, showing him bandaged and lying in a hospital bed.

The 26-year-old had spent the weekend attending VidCon and had gone out with a group of friends to a gay club to celebrate. However, the night took a terrifying turn when, he claimed, “I was separated from my friends and beaten up by three guys. The authorities should have been there to help and protect me but instead they treated me like a second class citizen. With three broken teeth and six stitches in my forehead, I’ve never felt so terrified to be a gay man in the public eye.”

It’s story that was corroborated by McSwiggan’s friend, Riyadh Kalaf, in a series of tweets.

The problem? There’s no evidence that any of it happened. But, there is evidence to suggest that any injuries McSwiggan sustained that night were self-inflicted.

According to a statement given to Mic by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, the YouTuber was was arrested “after deputies observed him vandalizing a car” on the 8900 block of Santa Monica Boulevard. At the time, McSwiggan “had no visible injuries,” which can be seen in his booking photo.

When he was placed in a cell by himself in the station, officers say McSwiggan “injured himself with the handle and receiver to a pay phone inside the cell.” It was later at the hospital that he took the photo and fabricated the story.

If McSwiggan did make it all up, it’s an unforgivable lie, especially in the wake of the Orlando shooting. The Internet backlash has been swift and merciless:

As of now, McSwiggan hasn’t offered any further comments.
