“Making a Murderer” Will Return for Season 2

If you’re a person with internet access (which you are in order to be reading this) or just someone who occasionally talks to other people, you’ve absolutely heard of the Netflix original docu-series Making a Murderer. If you are hearing about it, it’s usually when someone’s gushing about how you have to watch it.

Since it premiered in December 2015, the story of Steven Avery of Manitowoc County, Wisconsin and his ongoing battle with the legal system has gripped viewers and divided a nation. In 1985, Avery was convicted of rape and sentenced to 32 years in prison. Eighteen years later, DNA evidence exonerated him and he was released. But, the story doesn’t end there. Only two years later, Avery and his nephew Brendan Dassey were charged with the murder of photographer Teresa Halbach.

And—spoiler alert—both were found guilty.

When the first season ended, viewers were still desperate for more answers. Is Avery’s appeal going to be successful? Was Dassey manipulated by police into giving a false confession? Did either of them really do it? Well, now it’s official. Making a Murderer will be back with all new episodes.

“We are extremely grateful for the tremendous response to, and support of, the series,” creators Ricciardi and Demos told Variety magazine. “The viewers’ interest and attention have ensured that the story is not over, and we are fully committed to continuing to document events as they unfold.”

Following Avery’s new lawyer, Kathleen Zellner, and Dassey’s legal team, led by Laura Nirider and Steve Drizin, the second season will focus on Avery and Dassey’s cases in the post-conviction process.

“Because of Ricciardi’s and Demos’ incredible vision, commitment and keen eye for observation, audiences around the globe became completely captivated by the personal stories of Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey and the unique lens their experiences provide into the criminal justice system,” said Lisa Nishimura, Netflix VP of Original Documentary Programming. “We’re thrilled to be continuing our longstanding relationship with the filmmakers, and look forward to giving our global viewers eagerly anticipated updates on this story.”
