This Cat Really Wants to Play Olympic Beach Volleyball

It’s official: Olympic fever has gripped the whole nation. From the U.S. men’s swim team’s stunning 400-meter freestyle relay to the incredible journey of beach volleyball star Kerri Walsh Jennings and her new partner, April Ross, people have been glued to the screen. But, people aren’t the only ones getting into the Olympic spirit.

There’s one cat in particular whose adorable enthusiasm has become a viral sensation. Say hello to Smoosh, a kitty who’s very much invested in the beach volleyball tournament, as this video posted by her owner Russell Douglas Powell shows.

“She’s basically trying to play along with #KerriWalshJennings through the TV,” Powell wrote in the video’s caption.

In the 19 hours since the video was posted to Instagram, it has already been viewed over 2,000 times and has graced the webpage of several news sites.

“I did not expect this kind of reaction at all!” Powell told WMBF News over Facebook. “The minute Smoosh saw the volleyball game on TV, she jumped up and started batting at the screen. It was amazing how she tracked the ball as it went back and forth, too. It was so cute, especially since she just got her ‘summer cut’ and looks ridiculous. Here’s the best part—Smoosh slept all night in front of the TV and, when I woke up this morning, she was still sitting up there waiting for me to turn the Olympics back on. Needless to say, I think I have an Olympics enthusiast on my hands.”
