Only a few days into the 2016 Rio games and the U.S. men’s Olympic team has proven that they’re a force to be reckoned with. Just last night, Nathan Adrian, Caeleb Dressel, Ryan Held and Michael Phelps (the most decorated athlete in Olympic history) took gold in the men’s 400-meter freestyle relay
“It felt good to get, after my last 400 free relay of my career, this thing around my neck,” Phelps said, referring to the gold medal in an interview with USA Today. “It feels good to get it back.”
For Phelps, this medal is his nineteenth, cementing his status as a living legend in the swimming world.
“I remember saying, ‘Michael Phelps has set a precedent. Every time we walk on the pool deck, we’re expected to win gold. That’s what he’s done to the Olympic movement,’ ” said Adrian. “We couldn’t be more proud to get up there and do it. That’s what every young American sprinter dreams of doing, winning gold in that 4×100 meter freestyle relay.”
