Can You Solve This Incredibly Irritating, ‘Simple’ Algebra Equation?

If there’s anything we learned from post-grad life it’s that we learned nothing in college. It’s especially apparent when riddles classified as “simple” or “so easy it hurts!” start making their rounds on the internet and we can’t solve them. It’s sad and upsetting, especially considering the amount of student debt we’re drowning in.

WHAT GOOD IS A $160,000 PRIVATE SCHOOL EDUCATION IF WE CAN’T SOLVE BASIC MATH PROBLEMS!?

After the below math question started circulating online, we were faced with the existential dilemma once again. The puzzle involves working out the values of three symbols – a horse, a horseshoe and a cowboy boot. The riddle has acquired more than 500,000 conflicting comments and 13,500 shares since it was posted on Facebook. Literally everyone has a different answer and we’re incredibly confused.

Here’s the question:

Yeah… we have no idea WTF that means. We’ll give you some time to figure this out. Because guessing is fun, right? Crying over simple math is fun, right? RIGHT?

Ok, for those who can’t take it anymore (namely us), here’s the answer: 21. Now, you might be asking yourself, “how the f*ck is that possible?” To us, a cowboy boot, plus a horse, plus a horseshoe equals a very well-dressed animal. But according to elementary school mathematicians, we’re way off.

Since the answer to the first question is 30, that means that each horse is equal to 10. In the second equation, two horseshoes and a horse tells you that the value of the horseshoe is 4. The third tells us the cowboy boot is equal to two.

Time for that simple math and PEMDAS! If done in the order of operations, the answer to 1+(10×2)=21.

Time for a vodka tonic to make this headache go away, am I right?!
