Jennifer Lopez‘s childhood dream was to become “a famous movie star.” Not only did she become a star like she said she would, she raked in $300 million while she was at it. But she didn’t make the majority of her money from her acting or singing career. She diversified, like a smart businesswoman. Her high-profile appearance as a Judge on American Idol netted her a multi-million dollar ($17.5 million give or take) salary since 2011. Coupled with the money from her film career, her starring role on the TV show Shades of Blue, her Las Vegas residency and countless clothing, fragrance and accessory lines, and endorsement deals, J.Lo’s income is stupendously ginormous. She recently listed her luxury mansion for sale for $14.5 million. But that’s just one of her humble abodes. Most of the time, she lives in a penthouse apartment in New York.

Born in The Bronx, New York, on July 24, 1969, J.Lo became interested in show business after appearing in a minor role in the film, My Little Girl in 1986, when she was 17 years old. Her Puerto Rican parents didn’t want her pursuing an unrealistic career in show business because “no Latinos did that” but J.Lo was undeterred. This difference of opinions led J.Lo to move out and she began to dance and sing in a number of regional musical productions. Her breakout role came in 1991.
Out of 2000 applicants, she landed the high-profile job as a Fly Girl dancer on the TV show In Living Color when she was 22. Soon, J. Lo got a chance to be a background dancer for Janet Jackson performances.
This led J.Lo to appear in various big screen and television productions. Her role in the film Selena won her many praises for her acting talent. In the following year, J.Lo became the first Latina actress to earn over $1 million for a role, with the film Out of Sight, in which she starred opposite George Clooney.
After filming Selena, J.Lo was really feeling her Latin roots and a cut demo in Spanish titled “Vivir Sin Ti” (Living without You). That song caught the attention of Sony Music Entertainment.

In 1999, she began her career as a singer. Her debut single, “If You Had My Love” topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart. In that year, she released her debut album called On the 6. Since then, Jennifer Lopez has released five more music albums, which garnered worldwide success and landed in the top position on the Billboard charts, with her cumulative record sales being over $60 million.

Beyond entertainment, J.Lo began to dabble in other business ventures. In September of 2002, she produced her first fragrance line called Glow by J. Lo. Which was a huge success despite predictions that it would fail, and became America’s top-selling fragrance. Hot on the heels of Glow by J. Lo, in 2003, she launched her clothing line called JLO.

Over the years, J.Lo continued to create new fragrances under her brand. Her fifteenth fragrance Love and Light was launched exclusively on HSN. 51,000 bottles of the perfume were sold at its premiere, becoming Lopez’s most successful fragrance launch to date, making over $2.9 million.
Of course, that’s just a drop in the ocean. There’s also the L’Oreal endorsement deal, her ongoing Vegas residency, and the $20 million paycheck for being a judge on American Idol.
J.Lo is doing very well indeed.
At the 2017 Grammy Awards Lopez presented the award for Best New Artist. However before all the pleasantries began, she took a step forward and opened up with a political speech on the importance of music and how our voices are the most important tools at this point in time.
“. . .This night is not about dresses or even the awards.” said Lopez. “It is about the music, the words, and the voices. How they move us, inspire us, and touch all our lives. At this particular moment in history, our voices are needed more than ever.”
She is also planning new projects, such as a collaboration with Drake, a Spanish album, another season of Shades of Blue and more.
At the Staples Center in Los Angeles, Jennifer Lopez brought the house down with her fiery performance at the 11th annual Calabash.
