Meet Miss America 2017: Former Miss Arkansas, Savvy Shields

Former Miss Arkansas Savvy Shields upgraded her crown yesterday when she won the prestigious title of Miss America 2017. Shields beat out 51 other girls during the competition in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

So what is there to know about the new Miss America? Well for starters, she’s a huge fan of Beyoncé, just like the rest of the population. “I want to be a backup dancer for Beyoncé,” she confessed. “I feel like that’s every dancer’s secret dream is to be a backup dancer for Beyoncé especially with her new tour.” The 21-year-old dancer is currently a student at University of Arkansas majoring in art with a minor in business, and a dedicated sorority sister.

“The biggest thank you in the world to everyone who came by Kappa tonight. I am so humbled by all of the kindness I have received this past month and am so excited to represent you all at the Miss America pageant,” she wrote in a recent Instagram post. “So much love and so much virtual hugs.” When she’s not studying for classes, Shields can be found hanging out with her incredibly supportive sorority sisters.

She also told judges Gabby Douglas, Mark Cuban and Ciara that she has a very positive mindset. “That would be the best day of my life in the future,” she said when asked about winning Miss America. “I want to always feel like the best day of my life is going to keep happening. I don’t want to think that I’ve hit it. I want to keep expecting and knowing that better things are going to happen in my life.”

And for Shields, this was a pretty big win. Congrats Savvy!
