Steven Avery and Lynn Hartman have already called it quits after announcing their engagement just nine days ago. The split was announced by Sandra Greenman, Avery’s former fiancee, in a long-winded Facebook post made the same day Hartman’s Dr. Phil episode is scheduled to air on national television.
“Steve called me two times tonight and wants everyone to know that Lynn (Hartman) and him are done,” Greenman wrote. “She has been in this relationship for money and publicity. His eyes are finally opened!!!”
She continued, “Lynn received at least $5,000 from Dr. Phil and he thinks more. she got about $1,000 for doing other shows. She also wanted to be on as many as possible. his words – she is a golddigger. He wants someone to contact Dr. Phil before Mon. show annd [sic] let him know she was only in the relationship for money. I check and doublechecked[sic] with him to make very sure he wanted this put on and he said very much so.”

Carla Chase, Avery’s cousin who previously came to the couple’s defense over similar accusations on social media, also backed up Greenman’s statement. “I had missed a call from Steven this afternoon but yes I had talked to Dolores & got some updates,” she wrote. “I just didn’t wanna say anything till Steven called me back. Lynn has actually blocked the prison # from her phone & Steven has not been able to get ahold of her. So please, don’t let her be the victim as she’s trying to play… saying ‘she’s been waiting for his call’ she has had my home #blocked for weeks.”
The two initially got to know each other through a strong of letters, which then progressed to phone calls. They met for the first time in person roughly two weeks ago, when Hartman secretly visited him at Waupun Correctional Institute in Wisconsin. By then, they had been dating for eight months.
“She’s going to be my future bride,” he told Daily Mail during a recent interview. “We’ll be laughing forever. I’m happy, she treats me decent, she loves me, she’s kind of spoiling me right now. I jut want to be happy and enjoy my life, I think I did enough time.”
He expressed similar feelings in a brief interview with Dr. Phil, saying “I haven’t been in love my whole life. It’s not the same as the others. Everything is all different with her.”
The special, which is set to air today and tomorrow, also features Hartman unveiling her wedding dress. Awkward.
