Stories like this are unfortunately becoming far too common. Erika Hurt, a 25-year-old from Hope, Indiana, was recently found unconscious in the front seat of her car after overdosing on heroin. The incident occurred while Hurt was in the parking lot of a local Dollar General. The woman can be seen with a needle still in her hand after she passed out. The most troubling part of the story is that her 10-month-old child was sitting in the backseat of the car while this was going on.
The police released the details of the case recently and revealed a disturbing image of the woman in her car.
Marshal Matthew Tallent spoke to the Indianapolis Star about the heroin epidemic and the morality of sharing pictures like this to the public. Tallent told the newspaper, “My intention with these photos is not to shame the mother, although I realize it may appear embarrassing. I honestly think this picture should be used as an educational tool because I want people to see what this drug is doing.” Surely Hurt’s incident will serve as a learning lesson not only for herself but for others as well.
Hurt needed to be revived with opioid antidote naloxone and was subsequently taken to the hospital. She was then charged with child endangerment and possession of drug paraphernalia. Hopefully, there’s someone who is responsible enough to take care of her child while she’s dealing with her issues.
