Zsa Zsa Gabor, the Hungrarian-American actress and socialite known best for her lively love life, died this weekend in Los Angeles of heart failure. She was 99 years old.
Gabor quickly made a name for herself in Hollywood thanks to her big personality, true love of glamour and devoted interest in rich men (can you blame her?). She was married eight times (nine if you count that one time she annulled her marriage to a Mexican actor just a day after the two tied the knot) and was completely unapologetic about her turbulent love life.
Her husbands included a Turkish diplomat, hotel heir Conrad Hilton, actor George Sanders, an industrialist, an oil magnate, a toy designer, a divorce lawyer (the irony!), and some guy who was often referred to as the Duke of Saxony in the press.
If there’s anyone who knew a thing about love, marriage and divorce, it was Zsa Zsa Gabor. Here are some of her best and most memorable quotes.
“I never hated a man enough to give him his diamonds back.”
“I am a marvelous housekeeper. Every time I leave a man, I keep his house.”
“A man in love is incomplete until he has married. Then he’s finished.”
“Getting divorced just because you don’t love a man is almost as silly as getting married just because you do.”
“I want a man who’s kind and understanding. Is that too much to ask of a millionaire?”
“Macho does not prove mucho.”
“How many husbands have I had? You mean apart from my own?”
“One of my theories is that men love with their eyes; women love with their ears.”
“I know nothing about sex, because I was always married.”
“I don’t remember anybody’s name. How do you think the “dahling” thing got started?”
