How To Keep Your Blind Date From Being Totally Awkward

Blind dates are usually pretty stressful. Maybe you met a guy on Tinder and are hoping he looks as good in real life as he does in his photos, or maybe your BFF set you up with one of her classmates.

Either way, you’re probably worried about what to wear and how to get ready for your date. Fear not, because we have five tips that will help you kill it.

1. When you’re getting ready, it’s important to stay true to yourself.

Choose an outfit you would normally wear to work or school. Don’t try to completely change your appearance by going over the top with makeup. If he doesn’t like what you really look like, then he doesn’t deserve you!

2. Don’t drink.

It’s probably tempting to have a glass of wine (or take some shots…) to help you relax and unwind. But if you’re planning to have a drink or two at the restaurant or at the bar, you definitely shouldn’t be pregame for your date. You want to be level-headed and at your best when you’re meeting someone for the first time!

3. Have some conversation topics in mind.

Don’t write down a list to bring with you, but take a minute to think of things you’d like to have a conversation about. Ask about what he majored in, his dream vacation, or what his signature dish in the kitchen is.

4. Don’t creep on his social channels.

It’s so easy to get carried away scrolling through someone’s Instagram or Twitter feeds, but this might give you a wrong (or outdated) perception of them. It’s better to arrive at a date without knowing about his entire extended family, so you’ll have something to chat about and you can form your own opinions (and you won’t accidentally reveal that you creeped on him!).

5. Wear something striking.

If you’ve actually never seen the person you’re going on a date with, wear something that will make you identifiable, like a bright scarf. He’ll be able to find you quickly and minimize awkwardness!
