Meghan Markle’s name was one that many weren’t exactly familiar with until 2016. Though Markle is a successful lead on the popular series Suits, she also is a relative unknown in the entertainment industry.

How did the actress go from being an unknown to the most Googled person of 2016 in the latter half of the year?

Dating a royal will do it. Markle entered the public consciousness as the unexpected girlfriend of Britain’s Prince Harry.

That said, Markle is much more than the girlfriend of royalty. There’s a lot to be learned about her, especially because it doesn’t seem like she’s going anywhere, with or without a prince.

Here are five interesting fun facts about Meghan Markle.

1. She runs a lifestyle blog called The Tig.

Markle is the founder of a lifestyle blog called The Tig, named after a type of wine. She hopes for the blog to be “a hub for the discerning palate – those with a hunger for food, travel, fashion & beauty.”

She frequently updates with stories on her different adventures and business ideas, making “a space to share all of these loves, to invite friends to share theirs as well, and to be the breeding ground for ideas & excitement, for an inspired lifestyle.”

2. She is very involved in several good causes.

Markle is known for her participation in humanitarian causes, particularly her role UN Women’s advocate for political participation and leadership. She traveled to Rwanda for World Vision Canada’s Clean Water Campaign and also spoke for the international charity One Young World at their Dublin and Ottawa summits.

On her blog, Markle responded to questions about how she juggles her acting roles with her philanthropic pursuits in a post entitled “How To Be Both.”

“The moment Suits became successful and I realized people (especially young women) were listening to what I had to say, I knew I needed to be saying something of value,” Markle said of her decision to expand her influence and to work with different charities.

3. She’s open about her role as a multi-racial actress in Hollywood.

She has been candid about her struggles as a person of mixed race in the entertainment industry, writing an essay for Elle about how she answers the common question of, “What are you?” Markle’s mother is black and her father is white, and she says the complexities of her racial identity have been tough to navigate in Hollywood.

Via Elle:

Being ‘ethnically ambiguous’, as I was pegged in the industry, meant I could audition for virtually any role. Morphing from Latina when I was dressed in red, to African-American when in mustard yellow; my closet filled with fashionable frocks to make me look as racially varied as an Eighties Benetton poster. Sadly, it didn’t matter: I wasn’t black enough for the black roles and I wasn’t white enough for the white ones, leaving me somewhere in the middle as the ethnic chameleon who couldn’t book a job.

Markle has said her role on Suits allows her to be herself and embraces the duplicity of her race.

4. She’s a foodie.
