2016 has undeniably gone down in history as a year of unbelievable change (in more awful ways than great ones, if we’re being honest). While some of us are struggling to come to terms with the more difficult changes, TV lovers will be proud to say that television creators made better decisions than most Americans did on Election Day. 2016 saw the greatest television evolution to date, with new shows to satisfy every kind of American in a diverse, unique and exciting way.
Thanks to 2016 we saw shows tackle, embody, and dispute a lot of timely issues brought up by this year’s election. What’s even more exciting is the creation of girl power television. Most popular, primetime television shows were led by strong female characters, including Cookie on Empire, Olivia Pope on Scandal, Annalise Keating on How to Get Away with Murder and the beloved Meredith Grey on Grey’s Anatomy.
To celebrate this year’s monumental television evolution, here are five series you’d be a fool not to catch up on before their second season. If you’re looking for relationships, royalty, sports, music or just plain awkwardness, you’ll definitely have no problem binge watching any one of these critically acclaimed shows.
