According to a predictable scientific study, women feel more guilty after experiencing a one night stand than men do. In a world where women are continually slut shamed for just about everything, we can’t say we’re surprised by their findings, but the study also claims that the reasoning for this emotion lies in evolution.
To assess the attitudes towards one night stands, researchers turned to 263 Norwegians, a group that is considered to be more sexually liberated. Each between the ages of 19 and 37, participants discussed their experiences with casual sexual encounters and 35 percent of women admitted to feeling guilty over their decision, while only 30 percent reported feeling happy with their most recent one night stand. In comparison, more than half of the men surveyed said the same.
On the other side of the spectrum, nearly 80 percent of women stated that they were happy about refusing their last opportunity to have a one night stand, while only 40 percent of men said the same.
So what’s the deal? According to Professor Leif Edward Ottesen Kennair, one of the study’s authors, a big factor is whether or not each party experienced the big O. Researchers say that women could be more regretful over their choice to have a one night stand because it takes them longer to climax than men, and some partners are just straight-up lazy (in other words, the woman leaves the experience without getting the sexual satisfaction she deserves).
They also found that women are more hesitant to have a one night stand because of their worries about pregnancy, STIs and getting a bad reputation. Apparently men could give two f*cks about all of that.
Here’s my take on this: when it comes to this particular study, f*ck science. DO NOT feel guilty about having a one night stand, if that’s what you want to do. Protect yourself, don’t worry about being slut shamed (because you shouldn’t be), and make sure to do whatever you want, whenever you want. Take it from Bey:
