This Year’s Oscar Nominations Are Making History As The Most Diverse Ever

The Academy Awards seem to have learned their lesson after last year’s backlash. After no minorities were nominated in 2016 for any major categories, A-list celebrities including Jada Pinkett Smith and Idris Elba led the boycott of the Oscars with #OscarsSoWhite on Twitter. The boycott gained so much attention that President Obama even commented on the award show’s lack of diversity.

This year, the Academy has recognized the talents of seven people of color for Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress. Other diverse nominations include Lion, Fences and Moonlight for Best Picture and Barry Jenkins for his directing of Moonlight. Lin Manuel Miranda has also been nominated for Best Original Song, “How Far I’ll Go” from Moana and has the possibility of getting an EGOT (an Emmy, Golden Globe, Oscar and Tony Award).

The nominations broke records this year with a record of six black nominees in the major categories, the most ever in the show’s history.

The following is the diverse plethora of acting nominees who blew us away on big screens and rightfully earned their nominations from the Academy this year.
