Cue the Nostalgia: Map Shows the Most Popular Disney Channel Original Movie by State

HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL 2 - School's out for summer and now, the competition moves from the fields of high school to the lawns of high society -- also known as the Country Club, not coincidentally founded by Sharpay's grandfather. When the other East High students get summer jobs there, before long, they face off over the country club's annual mid-summer's night musical production, on "High School Musical 2," airing on XXX on the Disney Channel. Debating the best Disney Channel Original Movie could take us days. Given that there are over 100 of the films, everyone is bound to have a different fave.

Luckily, decided to break down the most popular DCOM by state, settling the argument once and for all across the country. They looked at the complete list of Disney Channel movies, then used Google Trends data to identify the most popular movie in your neck of the woods.

Here’s what they found:

  • It’s totes about your hometown: The research showed that many states favored movies that look like home. Hawaii loves Johnny Tsunami, Nebraska’s fave was Cow Belles, New York favored Get A Clue, and Utah loves High School Musical.
  • We favor familiar faces: States with less diversity per capita prefer movies that are a little white-washed, while those with greater diversity lean towards movies that embrace people of color.
