How ‘Veep’ Left One Australian Politician With A Black Eye & Stitches

Australian politician Graham Perrett apparently laughed so hard at the season six premiere of the HBO comedy show Veep that he started choking on his sushi dinner. He then stumbled into a cabinet and knocked himself out, landing himself with three stitches and a black eye, proving comedy and danger aren’t as separated as we’d like them to be. Luckily that was the extent of his injuries and Perrett is recovering nicely.

“I mean, c’mon, I’m actually having a hard time believing it,” Veep star Julia Louis-Dreyfus tweeted. “But the real question is—what episode?”

She didn’t have to wait long, as Perrett himself answered her question.

The episode that got him was the first episode of season six where Jonah fakes cancer. The exact moment that inspired the fit of laughter? I won’t spoil anything, but it does involve a pun (finally, somebody who appreciates puns as much as I do).

Luckily Perrett wasn’t out too long, as wife found him on the floor (covered in blood) not too long after the incident. He believes he was only unconscious for a few seconds and when he came to he was still laughing at Jonah.

Veep’s executive producer, David Mandel, told Guardian Australia he was “very glad someone thinks the episode was as funny as we do.” He can also think of a few officials in the USA he’d like to send the episode to.

Mandel told BuzzFeed that he may even write this incident into the show one day, although we may have to wait a year to see if he makes good on this.

Veep airs Sundays, 10:30 P.M. on HBO. Just make sure you eat before you watch it.
