Valentine’s Day isn’t the only day we’re allowed to indulge in our chocolate fantasies. July 7 marks World Chocolate Day, and you can bet that I’ll be rushing out to buy some snacks after work. Today is the perfect day to give in to your cravings and treat yourself. You definitely earned some chocolate TLC. Don’t have an emergency stash? Well, hurry up and replenish those supplies! I know I have to.
But first, a quick history lesson. As you may know, chocolate comes from cultivating cacao beans. Hundreds of years ago, Mayans used to use cacao in their ceremonial drinks. It was also used as currency in ancient Aztec society. Makes you appreciate chocolate a little more, right? Well, it’s about to get even better.
It turns out that there are health benefits to eating chocolate. The salad joke wasn’t too far off the money, although enjoy in moderation. I favor milk chocolate myself, but dark chocolate boasts the most health benefits. According to the Huffington Post, dark chocolate naturally contains antioxidants that can improve your skin condition. It can also lower the risk of cardiovascular disease. By all means, eat some chocolate now and then. Your body will thank you.
Whether you eat chocolate when you’re sad or when you want to indulge, make sure to grab a bar (or two) today.
