The internet completely lost it over Ed Sheeran’s surprise cameo in the season seven premiere of Game of Thrones.
On her way back from killing a bunch of people, Arya Stark sat down and made some friends in the forest including Sheeran who played an unnamed Lannister soldier. He sang a few lines pulled from the novel and offered Arya some cooked rabbit.
While many fans rejoiced over the beginning of the new season, the singer received a lot of backlash over his appearance and deleted his Twitter for a short while after the premiere. Clearly the angry responses pushed Sheeran over the edge.
The director of the episode, Jermey Podeswa, even commented on the backlash defending the star. He said, “He was appropriate for the part because he needed to sing. If people didn’t know who Ed was, they wouldn’t have thought twice about it. The hoo-ha seems to be from things that are outside of the world of the show. In the world of the show, he did a lovely job, and he looks like he belongs in that world.”
Some fans took this as a golden opportunity to make jokes. Here is a collection of some of the funniest responses, memes and tweets over the Sheeran surprise.
