The Original Plot Of ‘The Lion King’ Will Blow Your Mind

If you’re a Disney fanatic, The Lion King was and still is a staple in your Disney movie collection. You cry when Mufasa dies, sing “Circle of Life” off-key and at the top of your lungs and you know every word to “Hakuna Matata.” We can all agree Scar is the scariest and sassiest villains of all time but what if I told you Scar could have had a completely different storyline?

In one of the bonus features, The Lion King Signature Collection Blu-Ray the film’s producer Tom Schumacher reveals to Mathew Broderick, the voice of Simba, that Simba and Scar originally had very different plot lines.

In the original script, Simba wasn’t going to run off with Timon and Pumbaa. In fact, Scar was going to kill Mufasa and Simba at the same time. Scar would have killed Mufasa and would have had Simba’s neck in his mouth ready to snap it until his scheme took a left turn.

“The whole idea was that Simba didn’t run off with Timon and Pumbaa,” Schumacher told Broderick. “Scar was going to kill Simba the same time he kills Mufasa. He’s holding Simba in his mouth, and he’s about to break his neck. Everyone comes in and says, ‘Oh my gosh, you saved him from the stampede!’ And the idea was you [talking to Matthew Broderick] were gonna grow up with Scar and be the goof-off kid.”

It’s also been revealed that The Lion King was going to be titled “The King of the Jungle” and the original concept was going to be lions vs. baboons. Scar would have been the leader of the baboons and Rafiki was going to be a cheetah. Timon and Pumbaa might not have even been in the movie at all.

As interesting as this original idea sounds, I think we can all agree that we’re pretty glad we have The Lion King and not “The King of the Jungle.”
