Oh, vodka. It’s one of my oldest friends and worst enemies. I’ve made some of my best and worst decisions of my life with Vodka, and quite frankly I don’t regret any of them.
October 4 marks National Vodka Day, a holiday celebrated annually in the United States. Compared to other types of alcohol, vodka is a neutral grain spirit. Although its typically made by distilling fermented potatoes, you can make vodka from practically anything. Corn, rice, rye are all fair game when it comes to making vodka, which means the possibilities are endless.
But did you know that vodka can do more than just spice up a party? Here are a couple of our favorite vodka life hacks that we picked out:
1. Make cheap vodka taste better.
You don’t have to go out of your way to buy a bottle of Grey Goose. In fact, you can make the cheapest bottle of vodka taste like it’s high-end just by going through a few extra steps. Buy a simple charcoal filter and use it on your vodka. The filter will remove any extra impurities from your alcohol and make it taste smoother. Filter it a few more times if you can handle the wait.
2. Keep your flowers fresh.
Don’t hog the alcohol. Give your plants a sip, too. Add a teaspoon of vodka and sugar to your water to keep your flowers looking pretty. Apparently, the alcohol will kill off any bacteria that would threaten your plants while the sugar will provide any extra nutrients it needs.
3. Make the perfect pie crust.
It’s pumpkin season, so it’s time to whip up some baked goodness. To be more specific, we’re talking pies. Every family has a secret ingredient in their recipes, and this time the star of the show is vodka. Throw in some vodka into the mix to make the perfect flaky pie crust of your life. If you’re worried about the alcohol, don’t worry about it. It’ll all burn off when you bake it. Here’s a quick recipe if you want to learn more.
4. No Windex? No problem.
Is your dorm looking a little gross after partying every weekend? Instead of buying Windex, go into your stash of cheap booze and make a vodka dilution. Pair your vodka water with a spray bottle and you have yourself some DIY cleaning solution on hand.
5. Dandruff be gone!
Surprisingly enough, Vodka is great for hair care, provided you know what you’re doing. If you’re like me, then you probably suffer from a case of dandruff as the cold months draw near. Simply put half a cup of vodka and some crushed Rosemary in a jar and let it sit in a cool, dry place for a few days. After that, strain the mixture and massage about a tablespoon into your scalp. Let it sit for an hour and then rinse it out with water and a mild shampoo. Supposedly, the mixture should unclog your hair follicles and help with an oily scalp. You can check out Style Craze for a more in-depth explanation.
6. Keep your razors clean.
Speaking of hygiene, it’s important to keep all your tools in tip top shape as well. This is especially important for your razors. More often than not, our razors get dull fast because of all the residue we leave on it (like hair and shaving cream). Cleaning your blades doesn’t have to be an annoying tradition. Simply rinse off any visible hair and product before letting it soak in a glass of vodka. This will keep your razors rust-free and clean for your repeated use!
7. Cure your toothache.
Halloween is coming and I’m sure dentists around the world will make bank from all the sweet-tooth cavities. If you start feeling the beginnings of a toothache, try grabbing your trusty bottle of vodka. Put some alcohol on a small cotton ball or Q-Tip and apply it to your gums around the painful tooth. Soon enough, the pain should stop just long enough to dive into your bag of candy again (Just make sure to brush and floss regularly!).
8. Make an ice pack.
Drinking vodka to cure emotional trauma is all well and good, but did you know it can help out with the physical stuff, too? Vodka and ice are a match made in heaven, so it’s no surprise that you can make the perfect ice pack with them. Mix equal parts water and vodka in a freezer back and let it chill. The mixture shouldn’t freeze completely no matter how long you have it in there, so now you have a reusable ice-pack. It’s perfect for any bumps and bruises you or your friends get during your drunk antics.
9. Skip the Febreeze for your smelly laundry.
Are you holed up in your dorm with month-old dirty laundry? Are all the washers full of other people’s clothes? Here’s a quick solution to tricking everyone into thinking that your smelly shirt hasn’t been washed in the last two weeks. Simply make a vodka dilution and put it in a spray bottle. Vodka is a neutral spirit, so when it dries it should take any odors away with it.
10. Make your own DIY bug repellent.
Even if we flock to the sight of booze, bugs are a different story. Vodka makes an excellent bug repellent, so long as it’s not the flavored stuff. The only problem is that you’ll end up smelling like you came from a bar. There’s a simple fix for that, though. Simply mix a bit of vodka with your favorite scent and slap some on. Personally, I’d add some lavender oil to it. If you want to be a little extra, fill a jar with vodka and flower buds of your choice before letting it sit for about a month. I wish I knew some of these before. Especially the one with the ice pack. Do you have any vodka related life hacks that we didn’t mention? Let us know in a comment down below!
