Halloween films are typically only watched in the fall season, while horror films are pretty much a year-round deal. But, with Halloween coming up, watching scary movies is all the more satisfying when it gets colder and the nights get longer. Horror films aren’t always an easy feat to get right. Some films may rely on jump scares while others may fall flat with a cheesy plot. Luckily, there have been films that were made to do the industry justice.

Annabelle: Creation (2017)
Horror films with plots revolving around children are always eerie, as you watch as their innocence is tainted. Annabelle: Creation follows the transition of a nun and six orphans moving into a couple’s home. After an entry into a forbidden room, all hell breaks loose. You may just want to get rid of all your childhood dolls.
The classic tale of feeling out of place in high school, the modern Carrie remake tells the story of a vengeful teen with telekinetic powers. If you’re squeamish, don’t watch the end.
Don’t Breathe (2016)
There’s something this film just does right, from the multiple plot twists to the suspense throughout. It follows three young delinquents who break into an isolated blind man’s home, and find themselves fighting to break out. The film blurs the line between the good guy and the bad guy and will have you questioning who you’re really rooting for.
Get Out (2017)
This film received rave reviews earlier this year, as it tells the tale of an interracial relationship and a meet-the-parents weekend gone wrong.
Hush gives viewers a glimpse into the life of an author who’s deaf and unable to speak. The isolated setting and minimal dialogue makes it all the more suspenseful.
Based on Stephen King’s novel, It’s cast consists of great child actors who attempt to defend their town against a child predator in the form of a clown.
Lights Out (2016)
This film takes the one childhood fear you had and uses it against you. Not all films with supernatural elements come across as believable, but this movie executes it well.
A crime writer/family man makes a grave mistake when he moves his family into a house with a dark past. Some stories are best left untold.
The Conjuring 2 (2013)
The Conjuring 2 fits all the elements typically found in a horror film. While you can predict what will happen, you may not want to sleep alone after you watch.
The Shining (1980)
A cult classic with easily recognizable quotes, The Shining turns one of its protagonists into the villain on an isolated winter trip. It’s arguably one of the greatest horror movies of all time.
