Is there a more iconic activity to do over the holidays than building a gingerbread house? Okay, there may be: making snow angels, drinking hot chocolate, going ice-skating, binge-watching Stranger Things and then Riverdale on Netflix… Whatever holiday activity speaks to you, you can’t deny the love of gingerbread houses. Once Christmas season hits, bakeries are in full swing, offering courses on how to master the art of the gingerbread house and getting ready for competition season. Yes, you heard right: competition season. If you’ve ever spent a lazy day at home binge-watching The Food Network, you’ve probably seen commercials for the intense baking championships where the contestants have to battle it out via gingerbread houses.
Foodies take gingerbread houses very seriously and I can’t blame them. Never in my life have I attempted to build a gingerbread house because I’m not artsy in any way, shape or form. Decorating something I’m going to eat all (or half of) later? Nah, I’ll pass and leave it to the experts. Decorating the Christmas tree or being the resident photographer to take aesthetic shots of the bedazzled food creations? That’s more my thing. I just have so many questions when it comes to building gingerbread houses: how does everything stay so perfectly? How do you resist the temptation to just eat the thing before it’s finished? HOW CAN YOU CONTINUE TO TORTURE POOR GINGERBREAD MAN FROM SHREK AND EAT THE GUMDROP BUTTONS??
