There’s more than meets the eye when it comes to the “Unforgettable” star French Montana, who’s actual name is Karim Kharbouch. Initially making street DVDs of his work and selling them, he launched one of his first mixtapes, “French Revolution Vol. 1”. The artist dubbed his stage name early, stating he spoke French when he came to the United States and used “Montana” as homage to the Tony Montana character in the classic film, Scarface.

Kharbouch was born in Rabat, Morocco on November 9, 1984, where he played soccer and began rapping until he moved to the United States at 13. He did not speak a word of English when he moved to the South Bronx in New York City. He began getting acquainted with the language for a short period of time as he attended Roosevelt High School in the Bronx until he moved back to Casablanca, Morocco a few years later.

2002-2009

In 2002, he released his first set of mixtapes under the label “Cocaine City” and was slowly starting to get noticed by other artists. In 2009, he signed to Akon’s record label known as “Konvict Muzik”. Shortly thereafter, the songwriter flew Montana out to work on a promotional project.

As Montana’s music was on the rise, he began to stand out to other artists like Diddy. Diddy suggested French had a very unique sound that put him in a category of longevity. Eventually, a record deal with Bad Boy and Interscope Records was in the works. However, the final deal resulted in a joint venture with Bad Boy and Maybach Music Group, whose parent organization is Atlantic Records Group.

In 2012, he was named to XXL’s Freshman Class of 2012 which featured other stars like Iggy Azalea, Future and Kid Ink. His debut studio album, Excuse My French sold $56,000 in its first week of release.

2014-2016

Montana’s success doesn’t only stop at the music front. One of his major deals include the classic outerwear brand, Pelle Pelle. He currently has a varsity biker jacket known as the “French Montana Biker jacket”. His other deal, which nightlife lovers might be aware of, made him the ambassador for Ciroc vodka, with a personalized flavor known as “Ciroc French Vanilla”.

In June of 2016, French released his mobile game “Speed Gods”, which is free of charge in the Apple App Store. However, there are additional plug-ins for the game starting at $0.99.

His most recent and arguably one of the best hits to date, “Unforgettable” featuring Swae Lee peaked the top of the Billboard charts on September 2, 2017 as number 6 and remained on the charts for 16 weeks. The banger was no stranger to the clubs and was played several times on the radio daily. The song was such a hit that even artist PNB Rock made his own remix to it which some even prefer over the original.
