Ellen Kathleen Pompeo was born in Everet, Massachusetts on November 10th, 1969. She is the daughter of Joseph E. Pompeo and Kathleen B. Pompeo, her mother died of a painkiller overdose when Ellen was five, and her father died on September 1st in 2002. The actress was raised with five siblings and eventually moved to Miami, working as a bartender when she met Fashion Photographer Andrew Rosenthal and began a relationship with him. The couple then moved to New York City together where she was approached by a Casting Director.



After being discovered in 1995, Pompeo started working in commercials for Citi Bank and L’Oreal. Her first Television debut was a year later where she guest-starred in NBC’s Law & Order, returning for another appearance on the show in 2000. She also did appearances in Strangers with Candy, Strong Medicine and Friends. Pompeo’s career took off when she starred alongside Jake Gyllenhaal in 2002 in the movie Moonlight Mile, Landing her a Nomination for an Academy Award.
