What better way to start your year off and take a break from those New Years resolutions than with a day focused around one of our favorite snacks-popcorn. National Popcorn Day is celebrated annually around the world on January 19, and we sure are here for any excuse that involves a snack!

While it may be a bit too cold for ice cream sundaes, National Popcorn Day allows us to do some indulging.

So how exactly do you celebrate a day surrounded by one of the world’s most classic snack? It’s actually pretty easy. You can celebrate with your favorite popcorn by making your own. There are so many options these days aside from the classic buttered popcorn they serve at the movie theaters. Some people like to drizzle chocolate syrup, caramel or candy over their popcorn to get that yummy savory taste. Speaking of movie theaters, since National Popcorn Day falls on a Friday this year, you can take in a movie and add some extra butter to your popcorn tub to celebrate! If you rather take your tub else where you can take a photo and share it on social media using the hashtag #NationalPopcorn Day.

Americans may consume more than 13 billion quarts of popcorn a year, but things didn’t really get popping until the middle 1800s. That’s when candy store owner Charles Cretors came up with the idea to develop a machine for popping corn with steam, and thus popcorn became a favorite treat.

Louise Ruckheim decided to add peanuts and molasses to popcorn resulting in the creation of Cracker Jack.

As for having something to munch on while we take in a new movie at the theater, Glen W. Dickson, was the one who decided to place popcorn machines into theaters. Once other theaters saw how profitable it was, they followed suit. And we can give it up to Percy Spencer and the invention of the microwave for allowing us to pop our corn in the comfort of our own homes today.

While you are online perusing through everyone’s photos, take a look at some of our favorite popcorn memes and jokes.
