Let’s see how the Brazilian model’s been able to cash in on her beauty.
Gisele Caroline Bundchen was born on July 20, 1980, to Vania Nonnenmacher, a bank clerk pensioner and Valdir Bundchen, a college professor and writer. Bundchen has five sisters- Raquel, Graziela, Gabriela, fraternal twin Patricia and Rafaela. Along with speaking Portuguese, Bundchen also speaks English, Spanish, Italian and some French.
In 1993, at just 13-years-old, Bundchen and her sisters Patricia and Gabriela enrolled in a modeling course. The following year Bundchen was discovered by the Elite modeling agency at a shopping mall in Brazil. After placing second and fourth in Elite modeling contests, she moved permanently to Sao Paulo to launch her career. In 1996 she had her first big break at New York’s Fashion Week.
In 1997, Bundchen started her professional modeling career when she traveled to London and auditioned for more than 40 shows. In 1998 she got her big break when she was chosen to walk in Alexander McQueen’s Spring 1998 show. McQueen officially dubbed her “the body” and critics began drawing comparisons to fellow supermodel Elle Macpherson. Bundchen’s bookings were greatly increased, and she wound up posing for huge designer houses including Missoni, Chloe, Dolce & Gabbana, Ralph Lauren, Valentino and Versace. By 1998 she had graced the French cover of Vogue and by 1999 had appeared on Vogue covers three separate times.
In 2000, Rolling Stone magazine deemed her The Most Beautiful Girl in the World and graced the covers of some of the world’s top fashion magazines including W, Vanity Fair and Marie Claire. Bundchen also appeared on the covers of more lifestyle magazines like TIME and Forbes which at the time was almost unheard of.
As one of the world’s most famous models in the world, Bundchen’s paychecks were excessively increased. Bundchen was reportedly earning $7,000 an hour in 2000 and signed a $25 million contract with Victoria’s Secret where she would model the world’s most expensive bra at the time, worth $15 million.
As Bundchen continued to rake in millions for modeling, she soon branched into acting taking on roles in films like The Devil Wears Prada and Taxi, where she took home $1.8 million in earnings. By 2007 Bundchen was named as one of TIME magazine’s Most Influential People In The World and had amassed yearly earnings up to more than $30 million. In 2008 she was considered to the fourth-most-powerful person in the fashion world by the New York Daily News.
As 2009 rolled in, Bundchen’s yearly salary was still one of the highest in the industry, and she was earning upwards of $45 million. As Bundchen’s bank account continued to increase, the super model’s celebrity continued to build. In 2009, Harper’s Bazaar ranked her among the top 26 greatest models of all time and in 2010 she made Vogue’s best-dressed-of-the-decade. In 2010 she took the number one and number two spots on models.com’s Money Girls and Sexiest Models lists. In 2011 she appeared on eight Vogue covers, more than any celebrity or model that year.
Personally, Bundchen had been seeing NFL star Tom Brady since 2006, and the couple married in 2009 after three years of dating. Together the couple has two kids together a son who was born in 2009 and a daughter who was born in 2012.
Despite being married and a mother of two, Bundchen’s modeling career and celebrity didn’t show any signs of slowing down. By 2012 Bundchen had earned more than $90 million the highest amount of money the supermodel had amassed since her career began. In spring of 2012, Bundchen earned herself three major campaigns: Givenchy, Salvatore Ferragamo and Versace and appeared 5,600 times in commercials in Brazil.
In 2014 Bundchen was chosen to be the new spokesperson for Chanel No. 5, and in 2015 the Guinness Book of World Records honored Bundchen as the model who earns the most money each year. After going into a brief retirement, Bundchen walked the catwalk at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. As of today, when Bundchen is not seen attending her husband’s games or posting her adorable family on social media, she’s modeling is some of today’s most famous designers and brands.
