The Sports Illustrated Swimsuit edition revealed their cover model today and it’s model Danielle Herrington. You’re probably wondering to yourself, who is that?
For starters, she is only the third black woman to ever grace the cover of the Swimsuit issue. The other two are Beyonce in 2007 and Tyra Banks in 1996 and 1997. It’s been 11 years since Beyonce’s cover, so Sports Illustrated is on schedule to keep their track record of putting a black woman on their cover ever 10 or so years.

This is Herrington’s, 24, first cover. Her first big break was last year when she became a Sports Illustrated Rookie for their swimsuit issue last year. “It took place in Fiji and I was really nervous,” she told Fox. “You know how you’re so nervous your knees shake? That was me. SI was my first big job modeling so I definitely felt the pressure within me.”
Herrington found out that she was the SI cover model with help from Tyra Banks. Banks was at a fake photoshoot that Herrington “accidentally” crashed. Banks then revealed to Herrington she was the cover model like she was on America’s Next Top Model. Both models were tearing up, especially Herrington who credited Tyra’s SI covers as her inspiration to model.
Since then her modeling career has taken off. She has walked for Philip Plein’s New York Fashion Week show last season and this past season. She also walked in the Juicy Couture show this past NYFW. Herrington is also part of Carine Roitfeld’s CR Fashion Book and CR Girls 2018 Calendar. She also modeled for A$AP Mob’s collaboration with Guess.
Herrington lives in New York now, but she’s originally from Compton, California. She called her childhood “normal”. Her mom pushed her to go into modeling. She said she was super shy growing up, but attending modeling school at a preteen helped her build confidence. Herrington started modeling full time at 13.
Looks like Herrington is going to be everywhere now. Click through the gallery at the top to see the model’s best photos.
