They also became iconic because hello, it’s the Obamas.
During Michelle’s speech about her portrait, that was done by Amy Sherald, she specifically spoke on how her portrait will provide representation for black girls and women in American history.
“I’m also thinking about all of the young people, particularly girls and girls of color, who, in years ahead, will come to this place and they will look up and they will see an image of someone who looks like them hanging on the wall of this great American institution,” Michelle said.
A few weeks after her portrait was hung in the National Portrait Gallery a viral photo was taken of a small black girl standing in awe at Michelle’s portrait.
His post went viral and this image has made the rounds on the internet. BuzzFeed found that the girl in the picture is 2-year-old Parker Curry.
BuzzFeedHer mom, Jessica brought Parker and her 1-year-old sister Ava to see the Obamas’ portraits.
She said that she was trying to get Parker to turn around and take a photo with the portrait but she couldn’t take her eyes off of it. “She just wanted to stare at it. She was fascinated,” Jessica said.
The post went so viral that Michelle went and met Parker! She posted a video of them dancing to Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off” and having a good time.
Parker, I'm so glad I had the chance to meet you today (and for the dance party)! Keep on dreaming big for yourself…and maybe one day I'll proudly look up at a portrait of you! pic.twitter.com/faUVTsYWun
