Elgort was born on March 14, 1994, in Manhattan, New York. His father is Arthur Elgort, a fashion photographer who has worked extensively with Vogue magazine for over thirty years. His mother, Grethe Barrett Holby is an opera director. Elgort is said to be named after photographer Ansel Adams. Elgort has two older siblings Warren, a film editor, and Sophie, a photographer.
At nine-years-old, Elgort’s mother took him to try out for School of American Ballet. He attended The Professional Performing Arts School and began taking acting classes at 12-years-old. He attended Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School where he performed in a rendition of Hairspray and starred in his school’s productions of Guys and Dolls. 2012 – 2014
Elgort’s acting career began through stage acting and in 2012 he starred in the play Regrets by Matt Charman. The following year, Elgort made his film debut in the 2013 remake of Carrie. In 2014, Elgort landed his first highly publicized role in Divergent where he played Caleb Prior. Following Divergent, Elgort landed the lead male role in The Fault In Our Stars which ultimately put him on the map in Hollywood. That same year, Elgort co-starred in the comedy, Men, Women & Children. By the end of 2014 Elgort was named one of the best actors under 20-years-old.
In 2014, under the name Ansølo, Elgort created a SoundCloud account to publish electronic dance music where he remixed songs by Lana del Rey. Shortly after Elgort landed a record deal with Tom Staar’s new label Staar Traxx and Steve Angello Size Records. His first record “Unite” was released in April. His second record, “Totem,” was released in July. He played at the Electric Zoo Festival main stage in 2014.

In 2015 Elgort presented the award for Best Visual Effects at the 2015 Oscars. He performed at the Ultra Music Festival main stage in March 2015 and also signed a record deal with Island/Universal Records, releasing his first single titled “Home Alone” in July 2016.

He reprised his role as Caleb Prior in The Divergent Series: Insurgent and again in the 2016 film The Divergent Series: Allegiant.
In 2017 Elgort played the title role in the action film, Baby Driver, the film received positive reviews from critics and was a box office success as well.
