In the world of rock & roll and Hollywood, being a celebrity means you are not only subjected to an immense amount of fame and fortune but temptation as well. Celebrities who use and abuse drugs and alcohol has unfortunately become a common trend we all have seen all too often. There have been tons of stars who have unfortunately let drugs and alcohol get the best of them resulting in public embarrassment, ruined careers and for some, losing their lives.

1. Demi Lovato

Lovato has been incredibly open about her past battles and struggles with self-harm, having an eating disorder and her issues with substance abuse. In her latest YouTube documentary Simply Complicated, Lovato spoke openly about her ongoing battle with cocaine, with her earliest recollections of her using the drug being when she just a teen. The 25-year-old who is currently on tour tweeted out to her 55 million followers on Wednesday declaring in a heartwarming message that it’s been six years since she’s been sober.

“Just officially turned 6 years sober. So grateful for another year of joy, health, and happiness. It IS possible. [praying emoji]”.


2. Macklemore

Rapper Macklemore has discussed his struggles with alcohol and prescription drugs in an interview with MTV in 2014.

“If it wasn’t for that rehab center, I probably wouldn’t have been here. In terms of recovery, it has been very important for me to be a part of a recovery community, to actively be around my people because they understand me. They get it.”

The rapper eventually went to rehab at 25, after his girlfriend and family requested him and has been sober ever since.


3. Zac Efron

The 30-year-old actor struggled with alcohol and drug addiction after growing up in the Hollywood limelight. In 2013 Efron attended a rehab facility and has been sober ever since. Of his recovery, Efron spoke to The Hollywood Reporter in 2014 saying, “I just started going. And I think it’s changed my life. I’m much more comfortable in my own skin. Things are so much easier now.”


4. Kristin Davis

With alcoholism running in Davis’ family, the former Sex & The City star recognized the signs early and stopped drinking at the age of 22. Since giving up alcohol, Davis says she has gone on to experience a happy and full life with a successful career all without having to drink. She told Health in 2008, “I believe alcoholism is a disease. I don’t think you can mess with it. There was a time when people who didn’t know me well would say, ‘Couldn’t you just have one glass of champagne?’ And I would say, ‘No.’ I’m doing well. I still have occasional bad days. Why risk it?”


5. Bradley Cooper

Hottie actor Bradley Cooper has come out about his struggle with alcohol and painkiller addiction before him getting sober at the age of 29 in 2012. Now with more than six years sober, Bradley told The Fix, he wouldn’t be where he is today without his recovery.

“I wouldn’t have been able to have access to myself or other people, or even been able to take in other people if I hadn’t changed my life. I never would have been able to have the relationships that I do. I never would have been able to take care of my father the way I did when he was sick.”


6. Kat Von D

Celebrity tattoo artist and makeup mogul, Kat Von D, decided to stop drinking when it started to interfere with her work. Now nine years sober Von D thoroughly enjoys her life, work and friends. In her book, The Tattoo Chronicles, she says,”I wasn’t hurt by the fact that my “friends” weren’t including me in on the action, but it was reality sinking in that I had no real friends that stung the most. I had social pals, relationships based on nothing more than partying. I guess you could say I made myself into a party favor.”


7. Eminem

Rapper, Eminem, has talked openly about his prescription pill addiction and hitting rock bottom from a methadone overdose in 2007. Eminem’s been sober since 2009 and has since gotten healthy, learning how to live life without abusing substances.

“I knew I had to change my life. But addiction is a fucking tricky thing,” he told the Rolling Stone in 2011. “I think I relapsed within… three weeks? And within a month it had ramped right back to where it was before. That’s what really freaked me out. That’s when I knew: I either get help, or I am going to die.”

With more than three years of recovery, actor Daniel Radcliffe admitted to drinking heavily on film sets and struggling with risky behavior like blacking out in public. He now enjoys his sobriety by reading and staying healthy through exercise. In 2016 he told The Telegraph“There is something in any person who drinks in a way that’s clearly not good for them, something that is attracted to that chaos. I change when I’m drunk. I’m one of those people who changes.”

Actress, Jada Pinkett Smith, admitted back in a 2013 LA Times article that she struggled with addictions when she was younger. Her younger days were difficult, she said due to her mother being addicted to drugs. There were times that she didn’t imagine she would make it to 21. Now Pinkett Smith has more than 19 years of sobriety.

I had many addictions, of several kinds, to deal with my life issues, but today, at 42, I have my wisdom, my heart and my conscience as the only tools to overcome life’s inevitable obstacles.”

Actor, Tobey Maguire, stopped consuming mind-altering substances when he was just 19-years-old and has been sober ever since. Now at 42-years-old, Maguire has been sober for more than two decades. In regards to his recovery, Maguire told People in 2003,

“I come in, I ask for help. I’m willing. The person doesn’t tell me what to do, they tell me what they did. You do what they ask you to do and (stuff) happens. Your life gets better. Your life changes.”
