A Girl Texted The Wrong Number & Unknowingly Helped A Child With Cancer

Sending the wrong text to someone can be pretty embarrassing, but in Syd and Tony Wood’s case, it led to spreading awareness about a great cause.

A young girl by the name of Syd sent a text to Wood, a realtor, and father of six, where she asks his opinion on a dress she is looking to buy and wear.

Wood, whose wife wasn’t home and was out tending to one of their children with leukemia, decided to entertain the girl looking for guidance versus ignoring her or sending the standard “wrong number” response.

ā€œI believe this message was intended for someone else. My wife isn’t home so I couldn’t get her opinion, but the kids and I think you look stunning in your dress! You should definitely go with that one!ā€Ā  he wrote. He followed the message up with a picture of his children giving a thumbs-up.

Twitter user MandiĀ  Miller created a tweet using the screenshots of the mix up which quickly went viral after. Since tweeting about the wrong text, the tweet has received more than 700,000 likes and 176,000 retweets.

As for the reasoning behind Wood’s wife’s absence, it turns out that she was tending to her six-year-old son Kaizler, who is currently battling leukemia. Following the discovery, word quickly got out regarding Kaizler’s GoFundMe page and has since surpassed its goal of $10,000 and brought in $47,000Ā  so far!

Wood spoke with Heavy.com, and said ā€œit has been a whirlwind of shock the last few days,ā€ and that the experience ā€œhas also been an amazing blessing.ā€

As far as how Kaizler is doing, Wood gave an update saying the six-year-old is doing well.

ā€œWe’re in the regular maintenance phase, and his end of treatment should be April of 2019, God-willing. And he’s doing well…he’s having a little bit of trouble with his IgG levels right now, which involves the immune system. A low level for a normal person is 520 and Kaizler got an infusion a couple of months ago which brought him up to 496, but his last appointment on Monday he was down to 350. So next month they’re going to be doing another infusion. But he’s doing ok, he hasn’t had any major bouts of sickness or anything like that.ā€

Wood later thanked everyone for their donations in a tweet a few days later.

Wood told Heavy that more than anything he wants to get the word out about the importance of God and the fact that only 4% of cancer research funding is dedicated to childhood cancer.

“We just want to give God all of the glory because He has moved in a big way. We want people to know that this is God-moving. And of course, we are asking for ongoing prayers,” he says.

“On another note, this has put me into a unique situation where I can get in front of a lot of people right now and so I’m like, ā€˜you know what? I need to advocate.’

I want to be sure that we bring awareness…because only 4% of cancer research funding goes to children’s cancer research. And that is not a good system. We’ve seen a lot of our little buddies not make it on our journey, and it’s so hard. And it’s something I think, if there was more funding power to that, it’s something that could potentially be prevented in some cases. If you asked a parent with cancer who had a child with cancer, ā€˜would you rather put funding towards your cancer research or your child’s,’ what parent is going to say mine?!?”
