Early Life

Andrew Joseph Cohen first graced the earth on June 2nd, 1968. He was raised in a Jewish-American family in the suburbs of St. Louis, Missouri, to parents Evelyn and Lou Cohen and older sister Evelyn. When he was a kid he’d be glued to the television or grab a hairbrush and pretend it was a microphone and pretend that he was on television. As he got older, his affliction for television continued to grow. While he was attending Clayton High School, Andy had internships at St. Louis TV and different radio stations, which led to his interest in communications and journalism.

Cohen graduated from Boston University with a BA in broadcast journalism and went on to land a job in New York as a News Clerk at CBS News assigned to the network’s morning show CBS This Morning. He stayed at CBS for 10 years and became a producer on the morning show and also the prime-time news magazine 48 Hours. Then in 2000, he landed a job in program development at Trio, a cable network owned by NBC-Universal.

Four years later, in 2004 Andy moved over to Bravo as the vice president of original programming. During his 10 years in program development at Bravo, Cohen helped shepherd the reality shows that would define the network – from the Real Housewives franchise to a slew of others, including Project RunwayTop ChefQueer Eye for the Straight GuyThe Millionaire MatchmakerKathy Griffin: My Life on the D List and many others.

Cohen is most closely associated with The Real Housewives franchise which started in 2006 with The Real Housewives of Orange County. Cohen helped launch the franchise and now executive produces the show that now highlights housewives in cities all over the country such as, New York City, Atlanta, Beverly Hills and New Jersey. But it all started to change once Andy started a blog about The Real Housewives, which then lead to an online show and hosting reunion specials, and ultimately turned into what has become one of the most talked about talk shows of our time, Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen.

This now meant that Andy Cohen was the first openly gay host of an American late-night talk show. The show came alive in 2009 when Andy first introduced us to his Bravo Clubhouse and its initial success allowed it to become a twice-weekly show that would later be picked up in three-month increments; a year in, they finally got a full-year pickup. Although the studio is known for its overwhelmingly small size, that doesn’t stop Cohen and all of his guests from drinking alcohol on live television and Cohen from getting those guests to answer all of the hard-hitting questions we’ve all been dying to have answered.

Outside of Bravo, Andy Cohen has continued to expand his media footprint by writing several books, Most Talkative: Stories from the Front Lines of Pop Culture (2013), The Andy Cohen Diaries: A Deep Look At a Shallow Year (2015) and Superficial: More Adventures from the Andy Cohen Diaries (2017), all titles which have landed him top spots on the New York Times Best Seller’s List and led to his own book imprint, Andy Cohen Books, with Henry Holt & Co. He also has his own channel on Sirius XM called Radio Andy and tours the country with his other silver fox best friend, Anderson Cooper to discuss a variety of topics before live audiences. Also, in 2017 Andy signed on to become the new host of the rebooted show, Love Connection, on FOX. The show’s success leads to Season 2, which just wrapped up filming.

As of 2018, Andy Cohen is worth $15 million and earns $2 million a year. He is truly one of a kind, in that he’s one of the only executives in TV history to have parlayed a career in program management and production into a career as a TV star. Through Cohen’s immense success as an executive producer, he’s won one Emmy and has received several nominations. At the end of 2017, Andy Cohen and Bravo renewed their multi-tiered agreement through 2020 allowing the show to go ahead to three more seasons.
