Besides debuting Minaj’s new songs she talked to Lowe about her social media hiatus, writing her album and her upcoming documentary and tour. Lowe also asked Minaj about in the middle of the feud between her boyfriend Meek Mill and best friend Drake and the rumored beef between her and Cardi B. Minaj didn’t hold back and got pretty emotional talking about all the drama.
Meek Mill & Drake
Way back in 2015, Meek Mill who Minaj was dating at the time, accused Drake of having ghostwriters. He accused Drake of not writing his own lyrics and started a major feud between the two rappers that resulted in iconic diss tracks.
Minaj was in the middle of the drama because she and Drake are close friends and Meek was her BF. So you can imagine how stressful it was for Nicki. “It was one of the hardest parts of my career to date,” she said. “At the time, I did love both of them. I couldn’t erase the love that I had for my team. But I also couldn’t speak out. I couldn’t really say much. I felt so imprisoned in that moment.”
She said that she told Meek to not start drama with Drak and to not say that he uses ghostwriters. But we all know that he didn’t take Minaj’s sound advice.
Minaj said later when the drama was over the Drake was just worried about their friendship.
“When we later spoke about it, Drake said, “I wasn’t worried about anything in that entire situation other than, ‘What if Nicki takes a shot at me? Then what? What if Nicki spits bars at me?'” He said throughout the whole beef, that’s the only thing he was worried about because that would’ve been so hurtful and painful for both of us.”
She said it was difficult to stay out of the ongoing drama between Drake and Meek. But she said the two are past the drama. “One thing I do know is that both Meek and Drake have moved on from that — from the anger and all the stuff. We all have moved on,” Minaj stated.
Lowe also brought up the rumored hate between Minaj and newcomer rapper Cardi B. Minaj was completely honest about her feelings towards Cardi and it’s not all bad, but not all great.
“The only thing with Cardi that really, really, really hurt my feelings was the first interview she did after ‘MotorSport’ came out. With ‘MotorSport,’ I kinda felt ambushed,” Minaj said.
She’s referencing an interview where Cardi said Nicki changed her verse after Cardi recorded hers. “The first interview [Cardi B] did after ‘MotoSport’ came out, it just really hurt me because she looked so aggravated and angry,” Minaj said. “She just kept saying she didn’t hear it…. I was like, What?”
She’s upset that the first thing Cardi said about rapping with Minaj was that she switched her verse making it look like she was a liar. It also didn’t help that for the music video the two didn’t film together.
Minaj said the only reason why they weren’t together in the music video was that of a scheduling conflict because the two rappers use the same hairstylist. “She [Cardi B] started using my hairdresser,” she said “There really was a scheduling conflict because of him.” Which is why she had to shoot on another day and everyone knew that especially Cardi because they have the same hairdresser. At this point Minaj starts getting emotional and sniffling.
Minaj tried to clear the air and explain how MotorSport came about, but people called her a liar. She texted Quavo to back her up and clear the air and he wouldn’t. Minaj made it a point to say that she loves Quavo, but he did leave her to be attacked while Cardi played the victim.
“He texted me, he was like ‘I would go on Twitter and back you up if you were my girl lol.’ And that hurt because I love him,” Minaj told Lowe. “Quvo told me that ‘I’m not going to go on Twitter and address that shit man, if I do an interview then I’ll address it’ and I was like ‘Yikes’ because it hurt my feelings to know that people would watch me be slaughtered and not one person would step in to say the truth.”
Minaj congratulated Cardi on the success of her career and said that Cardi was genuinely nice to her in her last interview.
She said that “Barbie Tingz” isn’t about Cardi B and she wrote it years ago in Paris originally for Drake.
