Grab Your Amigas & Celebrate Cinco De Mayo With These Funny Memes & GIFs

It’s May 5th which means that it’s Cinco de Mayo! Cinco de Mayo is celebrated annually in Mexico and in the United States every 5th of May. Despite it being observed in Mexico and the United States primarily, both countries have vastly different reasons and origins for celebrating the holiday.

In Mexico, the holiday celebrates the Battle of Pueblo, which ended on May 5th, 1862, where the Mexican army successfully defeated the French. In Mexico, Cinco de Mayo is called ‘El Día de la Batalla de Puebla,’ which means The Day of the Battle of Puebla. Despite its significance, Cinco de Mayo is celebrated mainly in Pueblo, Mexico and it is not as popular in the rest of the country.

In The United States though, Cinco de Mayo began as a celebration to commemorate freedom and democracy as well as Mexican heritage and pride. The holiday started in the west and was celebrated within Mexican-American communities during the American Civil War. Eating Mexican dishes and drinking tequila are part of the American-ized celebration of Cinco De Mayo.

Since it’s origin, the holiday has grown regarding popularity and is celebrated across the country. The world’s largest Cinco de Mayo celebration is held in Los Angeles, California and is called Fiesta Broadway, and began in 1990. Approximately 600,000 people attend the party yearly.

Since gaining popularity in the States, in 2005, the U.S. Congress passed a resolution to recognize the ‘historical significance’ of Cinco de Mayo.

Although just as important, Cinco de Mayo is often confused as being Mexico’s Independence Day. Mexico’s Independence Day is September 16th and is considered to be Mexico’s most important patriotic holiday.

Cinco de Mayo isn’t just celebrated in the States and Unites States though. It is also celebrated in Malta, a country right below Italy and there are even celebrations in the Caribbean, the Cayman Islands, Montego Bay, Australia, London, Paris and even New Zealand.

While you and your amigos get ready for your local Cinco de Mayo celebration, take a look at these memes and quotes. And remember you can celebrate the holiday without appropriately Mexican culture.
