Kim Kardashian has spent thousands of hours in makeup and beauty chairs. All that time she has spent getting her hair and makeup professionally done means she has had to have learned some pro-level tips.
Kardashian and her longtime hairstylist Chris Appleton shared the six steps she always does to make sure her hair looks healthy, shiny and Kim K worthy.

1. No Sulfates
Appleton swears to achieve high shine hair you need to use shampoos and conditioners that are free of sulfates. The reason is that “heavy silicone can dull the hair,” and dull hair means less shine. Also, sulfate-free products will help stop product buildup, which can weigh down hair and make it look bland and dull. No one wants dull hair. Shampoos and conditioners will usually advertise that they are sulfate-free on the bottle, so keep your eyes peeled.
2. Cold Water
No one likes a cold shower, but doing a cold rinse after you’re done shampooing and conditioning can be a major game changer. Appleton says that the cold water “will seal the cuticle and really start to make the hair shine.” Bonus it also helps if your hair is color damaged.
3. Dream Coat
Appleton swears by the Color Wow Dream Coat to help protect against humidity and will “give you the most glossy finish.” The Amazon product page shows the list of ingredients, so you can easily find a dupe at your local beauty store.
4. Blow-Dry
The fourth step is to blow-dry on the lowest heat setting while using a natural boar-bristle paddle brush. Appleton explains why the paddle brush is important, “This will give you a much smoother finish and add better movement to your hair.”
5. Hair Oil
The next step is to apply a hair oil from mid-length to the ends of your hair. It’s important to avoid the scalp because you want your hair to look glossy, not greasy. There are so many hair oils out there and they all work differently on different types of hair. You can get really expensive oils or drugstore brand ones. Find one that works for you and your price range and use it religiously.
6. Mask On
Kardashian swears by doing a weekly intensive hair mask. Specifically, a mask that targets moisture. Again, you can find a million different masks in a wide price range, so find what’s best for you. Most hair care lines have single-use masks so you can test if you like the product before making the jump to a full-sized product. Make sure it’s a moisture restoring one so you can achieve Kardashian shine worthy hair.
