5 Tasty (And Somewhat Healthy) Snacks For Your Memorial Day Road Trip

If you’re heading on a trip this Memorial Day weekend, you’re going to need some snacks for the road, or else everyone is going to get hangry after a couple of hours. (That’s hungry + angry, and believe me, I’ve been there.) You’re going to face the dilemma of whether to pack snacks that are yummy or snacks that are healthy. It’s a difficult question to face because let’s be real: few things are more satisfying than devouring an entire Hershey’s chocolate bar. Especially the kind with the almonds in them. Fantastic stuff.

I understand that you may not want to be super healthy. Believe me, I do. Growing up, I was that kid who cringed when people’s parents would serve fruit for dessert. However, I think I’ve grown enough to acknowledge that there are tasty snacks out there that aren’t just straight-up sugar.

Here are a couple of options that are pretty healthy in the grand scheme of things, but still delicious enough that you’ll actively enjoy eating them instead of merely tolerating them.

If you like to munch on something crunchy, but you’re looking for a slightly healthier alternative to the potato chip, you may enjoy Bare chips. There are fruit chips made from apples, bananas, and coconuts, as well as veggie chips made from beets, carrots, and sweet potatoes. Within each category are more specific options and you can buy just one type or invest in a variety pack to mix things up.

You can buy a 24-pack of Bare chips here.

Nutritionist Joy Bauer’s goal in running Nourish Snacks is to create food that is both tasty and healthy, and these fit the bill. The bite-sized bits are a fun take on the traditional snack and come in several different flavors, including chocolate banana, coconut vanilla, chocolate peanut butter, blueberry apple and double chocolate. (You better believe I’d be eating that last one.)

You can buy 12 1-ounce bags here.

Sabra Snackers Hummus with Pretzels

Sabra packages their mini hummus containers and pretzel crisps together in such a way that they are super easy to travel with. When you’re ready for snack time, just pull the plastic, and you’ll have a little bowl of pretzels and a small bowl of hummus. There are three different types of hummus to choose from when considering which Sabras Snackers to buy–classic, roasted garlic and roasted red pepper–and there is also a version with guacamole and Tostitos rolls if that’s more your speed.

SkinnyPop Popcorn

If you love popcorn but still want to stay relatively healthy, this is your best bet. SkinnyPop Popcorn is all about keeping it natural. It is made with whole grain popcorn and natural sunflower oil, contains no artificial ingredients or preservatives, and is free of GMOs. SkinnyPop tastes great and comes in a variety of flavors, from Original to Aged White Cheddar to Sea Salt & Pepper. Plus almost anyone can eat it; SkinnyPop does not contain peanuts, tree nuts, soy, wheat, eggs or gluten.

You can buy individual bags here or a variety 12-pack here.

Wasabi Peas

For something with a bit more of a kick, try wasabi peas. Wasabi peas can be pretty spicy, but if you think you can handle it, definitely buy a bag. These little green peas are crunchy and hot, and you might not even have to share them with anyone if you can handle the heat but your friends and family can’t. The ones linked below are Kosher Parve certified, and the bag is resealable, so you can always take a break and come back to them later. I recommend them highly–just don’t forget to bring a drink.

You can buy some here.
