Freeman was born on June 1, 1937, in Memphis, Tennessee. He joined the Air Force after high school to become a fighter pilot from 1955 to 1959. He later realized it wasn’t what he’d wanted and then began his acting career. In the mid-1960s, Freeman first appeared in an off-Broadway production of The Ni**erlovers.
