Arie Luyendyk season of The Bachelor started with fans being confused as to why someone from Emily Maynard’s season that aired in 2011 was now gracing our televisions again. The season ended with Arie proposing to Becca Kufrin, then dumping her, then getting engaged to the runner-up Lauren Burnham. But that’s not all. Arie filmed his breakup with Becca and it was brutal.

ABC advertised the shocking ending as uncut and unedited, but now Arie is saying otherwise. For starters filming the breakup was The Bachelor producers’ idea, not Arie’s. He told GQ that when he reconnected with Lauren on New Year’s 2018 he needed to end things with Becca. They suggested to do it on camera so America can understand that he’s just following his heart.
“It was completely edited,” Luyendyk Jr. told GQ. “I was told to stay on that couch. I tried to leave, and then production was like, ‘You need to go back inside. She’s finally calming down. I feel like you owe it to her to have this conversation.’ So then I went back in the house,” he said.

One of the biggest critiques of Arie breaking up with Becca is that he wouldn’t leave, despite her telling him to leave and her crying and him breaking her heart, he just hung around. So at least that is explained.
Looking back on the 40-minute breakup it may have been obvious of how the production team would edit Arie to seem like the villain, so why would he agree? The production team said people would support his decision to go be with Lauren.
“‘Then we can show you going back to Lauren, and people are going to rally behind you because you took this big risk and you did it for love,'” according to Arie is what the production team told him. “‘At the end of the day, people will just want to see you happy.'”
After all of this Arie says he doesn’t regret filming the breakup but that he does feel betrayed by the show.
“I think if you look back at it now, it was positive for everyone,” he said. “Everyone ended up getting closure and also an opportunity to be with the person that they were really meant to be with.”
So there you have it Bachelor fans.
