Finally, the trailer for Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper‘s remake of A Star Is Born is here and it doesn’t disappoint. The trailer shows how Jackson Maine (Cooper) as a successful folksy solo singer unites with up and coming performer Ally (Gaga).
The trailer starts with Jackson strumming a guitar and performing to a large festival crowd. His mere presence envokes a rousing cheer. With Cooper’s gritty voice in the background, we see Jackson get into a tinted SUV and reach for a bottle of alcohol hinting at a drinking problem.
Then Dave Chappelle’s character, Noodles tells Jackson that he’s worried about him. Cut to Jackson walking into a room that is set up eerily similar to an AA meeting.
But then Jackson meets Ally in a burlesque looking bar. She sings, dance and has the most insane thin black penciled eyebrows. She reveals to Jackson that she doesn’t sing her own songs because she doesn’t feel comfortable doing so. Her uncomfortableness is just a mask for her insecurity. Gaga looks stripped down and dare I say, normal. It’s a stark contrast from how the public usually sees Gaga, dressed in avant-garde outfits that are borderline costumes.
It’s a dream come true and an honor to be a part of this incredible movie. Bradley Cooper’s ability as a director, actor and musician is astounding. I can’t wait for people to see this authentic, epic, beautiful love story. It’s called “A Star Is Born,” and I’m beyond thrilled for you to meet Jack and Ally. #AStarIsBorn @StarIsBornMovie
Jackson takes Ally under his wing to make her a star. The two start having a relationship while he’s mentoring Ally to become a star. In the middle of a concert set he pulls Ally on stage and has her sing her own song. From there Ally’s star starts to burn brighter and brighter.
From there, her career takes off and so down their relationship. They’re touring together, performing together and living life together. But of course there is some underlying issue lurking and it’s most likely Jackson’s alcoholism.
This will be the fourth time A Star Is Born has been remade. The original came out in 1937 and starred Janet Gaynor and Fredric March. Gaynor was an aspiring actress who met March, a fading movie star. March helps launch Gaynor’s career amidst his alcoholism, which was the downfall of his career. They get married and Gaynor’s fame grows while March’s diminishes.
The first remake was in 1954 starring Judy Garland and James Mason. This is when the plot changed from aspiring actress to aspiring actress who can sing. In the 1976 remake starring Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson went full musician making Streisand an aspiring singer-songwriter and Kristofferson a failing rockstar.
Cooper and Gaga’s remake refreshes the plot by having the duo be a folksy blues act and changing the main characters name to be more modern. Ally’s name was originally Ester and Jack’s name was originally Norman then made Jack Norma.
A Star Is Born comes out October 8.
