Queen Elizabeth’s Cousin To Have The First Gay Royal Wedding

That’s right, only one month after Meghan Markle and Prince Harry wed, it was announced that there will be another royal wedding first. As if Pride month couldn’t get much better, the Queen’s cousin, Lord Ivar Mountbatten, will be marrying his long-time partner, James Coyle.

The wedding will not be traditional, there wasn’t even a proposal. James said there was “just an acceptance of this great love.” There will also be no first dance or cutting of a cake. In fact, Ivar wants cheese instead. Only about 120 people will attend the wedding, which will take place at a small venue in Devon. Ivar didn’t want to get remarried because he’d already been married once, but he decided to have the wedding for James, because “James hasn’t had the stable life [Ivar has had].”

All of Lord Ivar’s friends have been supportive when they met James, one friend said, “If I was gay, I’d certainly go for him.” Prince Edward, Ivar’s best friend, and his wife, unfortunately, will not be able to attend the wedding, but they “adore James.”

Lord Ivar was married previously to Lady Penelope Mountbatten who will be giving him away at the wedding, an idea their daughters came up with.

Ivar and Penelope have three daughters, Ella, Alix, and Luli, all of whom are excited about the upcoming nuptials. When he told his eldest daughter, Ella, about the marriage she said, “Oh Pap, it’s not a big deal. It’s so normal nowadays.”

Ivar opened up about his sexuality to Penelope before he married her, though he never told his parents. “Where I grew up, gay men were called poofs, queers, everything derogatory under the sun,” Ivar remarked. He didn’t even come out until 2016.

Penelope noted that “Ivar is so much more relaxed these days…Everybody says they’ve never seen him happier.”
