Kate Spade New York Donates $1 Million To Mental Health Organizations

On June 5, designer Kate Spade died by suicide. The 55-year-old designer was found in her New York City apartment. Her family and fans were shocked by the news.

The name-brand company that she started in 1993, Kate Spade New York, has taken action in its founder’s honor. The company announced on their Instagram that they will be donating a million dollars to suicide prevention and mental health organizations.

Kate Spade New York will begin their charity work by donating $250,000 to the Crisis Text Line. On top of the $250,000 donation, they will match any donation made on behalf of the Kate Spade New York Foundation from June 20 to June 29. They will match donations up to $100,000. The max amount the foundation will donate will be $450,000.

The Crisis Text Line is a 24/7 crisis text line that connects U.S. citizens with counselors. The text line is confidential and can be used for any sort of crisis situation including mental health crises and suicidal situations.

The full statement reads:

“In honor of our company founder, kate spade, our foundation is donating over $1 million to suicide prevention and mental health awareness causes, starting with $250,000 to the @crisistextline. from June 20 through June 29, 2018, the kate spade new york foundation will also match public donations made to the crisis text line, up to the amount of $100,000. to make your donation, please go to crisistextline.org/katespadeny. thank you for your generosity and support.”

The foundation hasn’t announced where the rest of the million dollars will be donated to.

When Spade’s death was first announced, Kate Spade New York the released a statement on Instagram. “Kate Spade, the visionary founder of our brand, has passed,” the statement reads. “Our thoughts are with her family at this incredibly heartbreaking time. We honor all the beauty she brought to the world.”
