Celebrate National Pink Day With These 10 Millennial Pink Items

When I was in kindergarten, my favorite color was pink and I would say that at least half of the other girls in my class held the same opinion. By the time I hit the end of elementary school five years later, I was virtually the only girl who hadn’t changed her mind. My friends swapped out pink for blue, green and yellow. Pink was “too girly,” they said, and it suddenly wasn’t cool to have that as your favorite color anymore.

But honestly, eff that. If you look through my fourth grade photo album, I am wearing pink in 99% of the pictures and through the years, I have stayed loyal to the color pink–so much so that when I was moving into my dorm room freshman year of college, I was worried that my coral and pink bedspread was going to be too much pink for my random roommates to handle. (They survived just¬†fine. In hindsight, it was a stupid thing to worry about.)

As an avid lover of the color pink, I am excited to announce that today is National Pink Day! National Pink Day falls on June 23rd each year and although the holiday’s origins are unknown, the history of pink itself is quite extensive. Back in the 1300s, the world pink was actually used as a verb, meaning “to decorate with a perforated or punched pattern.” It wasn’t until the late 17th century that the word pink was a descriptor for pale red, and the color was named after a flower by the same name.

To people in the United States, pink is generally associated with sensitivity, innocence, femininity, and love, but it wasn’t always that way. At the beginning of the 20th century, it was actually more common for boys to wear pink–since it was a diluted form of red, a “strong” color–and for girls to wear blue, which was considered more delicate. Clothing for infants was often gender neutral at this time and the switch to associate pink with femininity occurred in the 1940s. Companies noticed that more pink clothing was being purchased for girls, so they began to cater to what they thought consumers wanted by marketing their pink clothing as feminine. The color pink also holds meaning within several religious contexts; it symbolizes joy, happiness and the body of Christ in the Catholic Church and is also spiritual in Hinduism and Buddhism.
