The first trailer for the aptly named film Beautiful Boy starring Timothée Chalamet and Steve Carell is here. Whether or not your heart is still mending from the end of Call Me By Your Name, get ready for the breathtaking Chalamet to shatter it all over again.
The film tells the true story of Nic Sheff (Chalamet), a young man struggling to recover from drug addiction. The film focuses on the relationship between Nic and his father and the deep effects of addiction on their family. Based on the books Beautiful Boy: A Father’s Journey Through His Son’s Addiction by David Sheff and Tweak: Growing Up on Methamphetamine by his son Nic Sheff, the film is directed by Belgian filmmaker Felix Van Groeningen. The trailer illustrates the intensity of the film–which critics have called “emotionally harrowing.” Oscar buzz has already been generated for Chalamet by this trailer alone. The first few shots of the film were described by director Van Groeningen as the most difficult as they involved Chalamet’s character being hospitalized for an overdose. The already slim Chalamet dropped twenty pounds for the role and credited this weight loss with many “close calls” and “doctors visits” throughout filming. He even described one exhaustive day of shooting saying “your mind knows you’re acting. But when you drop twenty pounds and you are under a rain machine for eight takes in a T-shirt–your body doesn’t know you’re acting.”
Get ready to grab all the tissues–Beautiful Boy will be in theatres October 12th. It stars Steve Carrell, Timothée Chalamet, Maura Tierney, and Amy Ryan.
