Tessa Thompson’s sexuality has been under scrutiny lately. Thompson has been linked to dating Janelle Monáe, especially after Monáe’s music video for “Pynk” dropped, but Thompson never publicly came out until now. In an interview with Porter, she confirms that she’s bisexual.

“I can take things for granted because of my family – it’s so free and you can be anything that you want to be,” Thompson said. “I’m attracted to men and also to women. If I bring a woman home, [or] a man, we don’t even have to have the discussion.”
Thompson has debated about coming out publicly because she enjoys her privacy, but also wants to use her platform to show bi-visibility. Her concern about privacy is also linked to her maybe romantic relationship with Monáe.
” That was something I was conscientious of in terms of this declaration around Janelle and myself. I want everyone else to have that freedom and support that I have from my loved ones,” she continued. “But so many people don’t. So, do I have a responsibility to talk about that? Do I have a responsibility to say in a public space that this is my person?”
When asked about what is the “declaration” of her and Monáe’s relationship, Thompson admits that the two are close. “We love each other deeply,” she stated. “We’re so close, we vibrate on the same frequency. If people want to speculate about what we are, that’s okay. It doesn’t bother me.”
Monáe recently came out as pansexual to Rolling Stone and identifies as being queer. She said that she initially identified as bisexual, but then later declared herself as pan. She clarified, “later I read about pansexuality and was like, ‘Oh, these are things that I identify with too.’ I’m open to learning more about who I am.”
