National Tattoo Day 2018: Best Deals, Sales, & Discounts

July 17 marks National Tattoo Day here in the United States and everyone who’s into ink is getting ready to celebrate. Though the holiday has only arisen been recognized for the last couple of years, humans have made permanent marks on their skin for thousands of years, dating back to at least 5,000 years ago in Egypt. Although there is still some stigma surrounding the permanent body art, people are becoming more accepting of tattoos in this country and many people in the U.S.–representing a wide range of ages, genders, occupations, and religions–have gone under the needle.

Some tattoos are meant to be an intense form of personal expression and have special meanings to those who have them. Others are just meant to be aesthetically pleasing designs. (My father has a tattoo of the Pythagorean Theorem simply because according to him, “It looks cool.”) Whether you have tattoos yourself, you’re thinking about joining the club, or it’s not your thing but you still want to support peoples’ right to decorate their bodies as they please, here are some great deals to help you celebrate National Tattoo Day.

If you want to get a tattoo

If you’re thinking of getting a tattoo, National Tattoo Day would be as good a time as any to live out the dream. If you’re in the Denver area, there will be a fundraiser for the Denver Public Library Friends Foundation where you can choose from several literary-themed tattoos at a very reasonable price.

Another way to get tattoos on a budget is to reach out to someone who is an apprentice at a tattoo parlor. There are many tattoo artists who are just kicking off their professional careers and in order to gain more experience, they are willing to give tattoos for free or at lower rates than most professionals. While it’s important to make sure this person is reputable by getting references from other clients, of course, some of these beginning artists are incredibly talented and will be able to give you the tattoo you want.

There are also professional tattoo artists who are giving out tattoos at discounted rates this week to celebrate the holiday, including the woman who made the tattoo above. She is offering 10-30% off each tattoo based on size and style and other artists have similar deals–just do your research.

If you can get your friends to go in on it with you, Groupon has some awesome deals no matter where you live in the U.S.

If you already have a tattoo

Those who are already inked can take advantage of National Tattoo Day in a variety of ways. If you’re a tattoo junkie and a bookworm, you’re in luck. Several libraries across the country–including the Stratford Public Library, the Pflugerville Library, and the Denver Public Library–will give you a free book recommendation based on your tattoo if you visit or if you send them a (G-rated) picture.

If you love a good drink as much as you love your tattoo(s), The Beauty & The Beeeef Burger Bar is offering a free sake bomb shot to anyone who shows off a tattoo. The restaurant is also offering a drink called the Tattoo in honor of the holiday that is described as a “henna-colored masterpiece loaded with Jim Beam Black Bourbon, triple sec, thyme syrup, cherry purée, lime juice, orange juice, and plum bitters, garnished with a fresh thyme sprig.”

If you’re a tattoo artist

For those who make them, tattoos are so much more than a picture; they are an art, a lifestyle, and a living. Luckily for you, National Tattoo Supply has some great daily deals during the week of National Tattoo Day, most of which don’t expire until July 22.

Sometimes tattoos don’t come out the way you hoped or just aren’t significant to us anymore. If this is the case for you, Amaran Aesthetic is offering 50% off on laser tattoo removal for the holiday so that you can get rid of your compulsive ink without breaking the bank.

Whether you’ve got an entire tattoo sleeve or can’t bring yourself to get anything more serious than a temporary one, enjoy your National Tattoo Day and don’t forget to use the hashtag #NationalTattooDay if you post about it on social media.
