On Wednesday, July 18 around 10 P.M., Mollie Tibbetts sent her boyfriend a goodnight Snapchat message–and has not been heard from since. Family, friends and police in the small town of Brooklyn, Iowa have rallied around the search for the missing 20-year-old University of Iowa student.

Tibbetts was staying at her boyfriend’s brother’s house in Brooklyn while dogsitting his two dogs. Tibbett’s boyfriend of more than two years, Dalton Jack, was in Dubuque, Iowa, about two hours away, for a work obligation. His brother, Blake, and his fiancee, Allie Houghton, were also out of town.

An Ongoing Investigation

Tibbetts was last seen by a neighbor earlier on the evening of July 18 while on a run. Many media reports have said Tibbetts vanished while on this jog, however, the timing and circumstances of her disappearance are not currently clear time as she spoke to both Jack and her mother after her run. While asked if she believed Mollie would ever purposefully leave, her mother, Laura Calderwood told KWWL-TV, “no, absolutely not. Mollie would never run off. I last spoke with her at 7:30 P.M. Wednesday night about what was for dinner.”

Tibbetts was reported missing on the morning of Thursday, July 19 after she failed to arrive at work or return any phone calls or messages. According to her family, her phone was going straight to voicemail. The family believes she could have disappeared any time between the evening of the 18 and the morning of the 19.

Tibbetts works as an intern at the day camp at Grinnell Regional Medical Center. As her work uniform includes a red shirt, the police are now informing the public that Tibbetts may be wearing jogging clothes such as running tights and a sports bra or her red uniform shirt and denim shorts. Tibbitts is 5’3″ tall and weighs 120 pounds, with long brown hair and brown eyes. Anyone with information connected to the case should call the Poweshiek County Sheriff’s Office at 641-623-5679. The Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation is also assisting in the disappearance of Mollie Tibbitts.

“Everything’s on the table, unfortunately,” Poweshiek County Sheriff Thomas Kriegel told KCCI-TV on Saturday. “We’re hoping that she’s somewhere with a friend and she’ll show up Monday or Tuesday and everything will get back to normal.”

According to Tibbett’s cousin, Emily Heaston, the police searched the home where Tibbetts had been staying and found everything in its place–including her wallet and laptop. Heaston told KWQOC-TV that Tibbetts had been excited for her second year of college at the University of Iowa and had a trip planned for the Dominican Republic the upcoming week. “I’m trying not to imagine the worst, but I’m so scared that someone took her,” said Heaston.

Brooklyn is a city of about 1,400 people in eastern Iowa, located between Des Moines and Cedar Rapids. Police and community members scoured the neighborhood around her boyfriend’s brother’s house and the surrounding area. The search concentrated on possible running routes she may have taken prior to her disappearance. However, the ground search has since been halted as other angles are being pursued. Poweshiek County Sheriff Tom Kriegel stated the authorities are “confident that every home in Brooklyn has been visited. Every farm building, barn and shed in the area has been searched.”

Emily Heaston, Tibbett’s cousin posted that Facebook the search was halted due to the high level of community involvement. This, Heaston stated, may have been making it hard for the police to investigate and speak to potential witnesses. “The important part of ceasing the ground search is that those residents are home and able to speak with law enforcement,” Heaston wrote on Facebook.
