South Carolina, a coastal state known for hospitality and comfort food, has made headlines for all the wrong reasons. While the food scene and beaches are fantastic in the up-and-coming Charleston, SC, how are education and safety? According to WIS News, South Carolina ranked number 1 in the deadliest state for women category. Meanwhile, according to US News, South Carolina’s education rank is 48th.

An elementary school teacher in Goose Creek, SC, 30-minute drive from Charleston, has received punishment after kicking a student on October 4, 2018.

ABC News shared security footage from inside Goose Creek Elementary School on October 18, 2018. The video shows a young boy being pushed out of a doorway. The teacher is then shown kicking the boy’s leg out of the door so she can shut him out.

Fox 11 News reported that students saw Tierra Walker, an elementary school teacher, asked the 11-year-old boy to leave the classroom after causing audible disruptions in the class. After he refused, Walker then forcibly removed the misbehaving child. She promptly kicked his leg out of the doorway.

In an interview with ABC News, Chris Capers, a father to a child at the school, said, “I can’t blame anybody. I can’t blame the teacher. And I really don’t know what’s going on with the student.”

Capers went on to suggest, “Have a desk or something like that set up outside the classroom where they can cool off. Do whatever they need to do. Homework or whatever like that.”

Another parent, Tina DiStefano, had a different perspective on the events.

DiStefano said, “Even if the kid was wrong, I don’t accept, as a mother, that the teacher would kick a kid. I would’ve been mad.”

No charges are being filed against Tierra Walker, but she is no longer working for the school district.
