J.K. Rowling, the author or Harry Potter, is suing her former assistant for stealing thousands of dollar from her.
BuzzFeed reports that Rowling is taking legal action against her former assistant, Amanda Donaldson. A representative for the author said that she is taking legal action against Donaldson, “following her dismissal for gross misconduct involving a substantial alleged breach of trust.”
Not a lot of details of the case have been released. According to BBC News, Donaldson was Rowling’s assistant from February 2014 to April 2017. Rowling is suing her for roughly $31,000.
The author believes her former assistant purchased unauthorized goods and stole Harry Potter merchandise from her. BBC reports that Donaldson was provided with a credit card and was only supposed to use it for business and personal affairs relating to Rowlings. She had to turn in her receipts once a month. In February 2017 there were discrepancies in her spending and she was fired shortly after.
Donaldson supposedly spent $1,900 on luxury candles, $4,700 on cosmetics, $2,100 at Starbucks and purchased two cats that totaled $1,500. Rowling also believed Donaldson stole roughly $10,100 in foreign currency from a safe she had access to.
On top of all of this, Rowlings believed her former assistant stole Harry Potter memorabilia. Part of Donaldson’s duties was to control Potter memorabilia and she used her position to steal memorabilia like a $600 motorized Hogwarts Express and a $2,900 Harry Potter Wizard Collection.
Donaldson denies these claims and says Rowling has “not suffered any loss and is not entitled to damages.”
